Why light is the standard in bathrooms
Light-colored tile is the standard choice in bathrooms and kitchens for a practical rather than aesthetic reason: it reflects light and makes normally small rooms feel spacious and clean. In an interior bathroom without a window, the wall tone has the greatest influence on the sense of space, much more than the floor tone, because it is the surface that occupies the largest visual field.
Two details completely change the result. The grout: with grout in the same tone, the surface reads as continuous and large-format tile looks like a single slab; with contrasting grout, it becomes a geometric pattern, which can be deliberate in a small format but is rarely what is sought in large format. And the finish: polished and satin finishes multiply the light and make cleaning easier, while matte gives a more restrained and contemporary look, with less reflection.
Among light tones, there is an option for everything: pure whites for maximum crispness, ivories and beiges to introduce warmth and avoid a clinical feel, and light grays for a more urban atmosphere.
